Company Origins

Fred Blackledge and Roy Musgrove founded B&M Wood Products in 1966. The facility included a peeling plant and one Creosote cylinder. Small teams used chainsaws and tractors to cut posts, which were then loaded onto trucks by hand for delivery. Southeast Georgia’s dense Southern Yellow Pine forest was ideal for harvesting small timber for fence posts.

James Stovall III bought B&M from Fred and Roy in 1974 it had $400,000 in annual sales and 8 employees. In 1978, B&M added another retort using CCA wood-preserving chemicals and a debarker to boost production by 50%. In 1984, B&M installed a mill for “Barn” poles up to 25 feet long and 7 inches in diameter.

Due to increased insurance and labor costs, B&M began a modern tree cutting operation in 1990, initially producing 10 loads per week and increasing to 40 loads in 4 years. In 2019, B&M sold its crew operation and started buying wood on the open market.

In 2000, an automatic grading system was installed to measure the diameter and length of posts. This system sorts the posts into bins with measurements accurate to the nearest 1/100th of an inch, providing precise product specifications.

Modern Operations

In 2014, we started buying tree-length wood instead of wood “cut to length.” We built a “cut-up” system to grade the wood before peeling in order to make the best wood into post material to get the best sizes for our customers.
