Our History

In South Georgia, fence posts were first made using the “fat lightered” part of Southern Yellow Longleaf Pines. Woodsmen cut the trees, hand-hewed the lightered parts into posts, and sold them all over the Southeast. These posts had a lifetime of 100+ years. Local farmers created fences by laying the “fat lightered” posts on top of one another in a diagonal line. When they started using wire for the fences, the posts were put in the ground to hold up the wire. As the older lightered trees were cut out, the woodsmen started using heart cypress as fence posts instead.

After the cypress posts were no longer available, Southern Pine trees were debarked and treated by dipping them into a barrel filled with creosote oil made from coal tar. The modern mills of the time used a machine to peel these small trees and pressure treat them in a cylinder or retort under pressure.

Company Origins

B&M Wood Products was started by Fred Blackledge and Roy Musgrove in 1966 as a post mill. They had a peeling operation and a creosote retort for pressure treating the posts. The posts were cut by small crews using a chainsaw and farm tractors. They used the suppressed trees from Southern Yellow Pine forests because they were very dense and straight—perfect for fence posts.

In 1974, B&M Wood Products was purchased from Fred and Roy. At the time, B&M Wood Products had sales of $400,000 and employed 8 people. In 1978, another retort was installed to treat using CCA since creosote was becoming more expensive. Also, we installed a ring-type debarker, and the production and sales increased 50% over the next three years. In 1984, a pole peeler was installed to peel larger “barn” fence poles, ranging from 4” to 8” in diameter and up to 25’ long.

Modern Operations

In 1990, small cutting crews were a dying breed due to insurance and labor costs, so B&M Wood Products started its own tree harvesting crew. After a year of learning, the company crew harvested 10 loads per week. Over the years, the equipment was upgraded so that the crew produced 35 loads per week. The equipment measures the trees’ diameter and length before they are cut. We program our equipment to cut the sizes needed, thus reducing our inventory and enabling us to respond to large orders in a timely fashion. In 2019, due to changes in the timber market, we opted to buy fence post and pole wood on the open market. We sold our harvesting operation, and the new owners are bringing us plenty of post and pole wood.

In 2000, we installed an automatic grading system that measures our fence posts’ diameter and length and automatically grades them to the nearest 1/100 of an inch, reducing the chance of misgrading.

James Stovall III is our current President with decades of experience. His son, James “Jim” Stovall IV, is the Vice President and has worked for us for 10 years. Sue Hodges is in charge of sales and accounting and has worked with us for 15 years. Both are very dedicated and work hard to keep our company viable and take B&M Wood Products into our next half-century of operation.
